Best Practices + Cheat Sheet for Web Designers

Web Designing is a tough job. We understand the tight deadlines, the multiple iterations, the late nights so we’ve put together some best practices & some design hacks to help you work smart & deliverer nothing short of excellent. Here’s how:

Before You Start

1) Have a Plan: Before you get to work on your project, it’s a good idea to draw out what you’re about to execute – the layout, the design, the images, icons placement, navigation, etc. Writemaps is a good tool to use to plan out your website layout. Many designers will tell you it’s useful to follow the 80-20 rule. What 20% of your content gives 80% value to your audience? It could be images, icons, the copy, stickers etc. but focus on the 20%. This will help you narrow down your content to what you actually need and omit the clutter.

Elliott Fienberg suggests you ask one question: Does your design fit on a post-it? “One exercise I like to do is to write down your core content on a small piece of paper like a Post-it note,” he says. “This will help you figure out what is really important and what can be omitted. The small piece of paper simulates the attention span of most users these days.”

Before you start, also make sure you’ve got your the requirements and scope-of-work between you and the client clear. To eliminate ambiguity between you and the client and keep track of billable time, use Toggl, a hugely useful tool to measure your work & add value to your efforts.

While You’re Working

So you’ve got a blueprint and are all ready to start. Here are some things to keep in mind:

2) Images Are Vital:  For every design & every website, the images you use make all the difference. We suggest you invest in a good, professional photographer for your images. If your budget doesn’t allow it, get a hold of amazing stock images at Gratisography, Pic Jumbo, Pixabay and the like.

Icons are necessary too. Small as they are, they too contribute to your website design. Move away from too much copy and replace it with icons that represent what you want to say.

3) Simple is In: You’ve probably read this in our previous articles but we cannot emphasize this enough! A good web design is always one that has a clutter-free feel. Try these tips:

  • Hide navigation icons in a hamburger menu
  • Use easy-to-read fonts
  • Ditch the sliders. It used to be a fad to add multiple sliders to accommodate or showcase more content but not any more. A single, clean, high-resolution image is enough to suffice. It not only allows you to focus on the single most important aspect of the brand but also allows for better user experience sans the clutter.
  • Eliminate Social Icons. If you absolutely must have the social icons, tuck them away in the footer of the page rather than the first fold of the page.
  • Limit your character count to 45-50 words. Avoid too much text. It only makes the website look boring and cluttered.
  • Limit your colour scheme. We know it’s easy to get carried away when it comes to colours but sticking to a few colours adds to the minimalistic feel.

4) Build Responsive: Although this seems like a no-brainer these days, designers still struggle with building some bits responsive. Screenfly & Browsershots are great tools to help build responsive sites. Videos can be the tricky part when it comes to responsive sites. FitVids is a jQuery plug-in that eliminates the problem of responsiveness and Flash embedding with videos.

5) Keep Everyone in the Loop: As a designer answerable to clients all the time, it’s a good idea to show you’re in control. That doesn’t always mean say all’s well when it isn’t. It’s quite the opposite. Being control includes calling out problem areas and roadblocks in your projects so everyone’s in the loop with the process and knows you’re trying your best. It makes you look more professional and builds credibility & reliability. Tools like Google calendars and Evernote help create checklists, reminders and keep up to date. Being proactive is a huge plus point.

Cheat Sheet (Bonus!)

  • Use Dummy Image Generator (the image equivalent for Lorem ipsum) for placeholders: Enter the width + x + height at the end of www.dummyimage.com

Eg. http://dummyimage.com/640×480

  • Use the wildcard CSS rule – using an asterisk as the selector and apply changes to an entire page.

Eg. To change all the fonts on a page to sans-serif, you just need: *{font-family:arial, helvetica, sans-serif;}

  • The Noun Project has an icon for everything! Find what you want here.
  • Use the Squint Test – Take a Step Back & squint as you look at your design for a quick way to learn what’s most prominent.

We hope you follow some of these best practices & design hacks! Got further suggestions & ideas? Leave us a comment & we’ll include it!

New gTLD Report – February 2016

In our previous reports, we were having a month-on-month comparison of the new gTLD registrations. For February, we are doing our report in a slightly different format.

What’s new?

We are taking into account the domains registered exclusively in this month rather than all the domains registered through us till date. This is to ensure that all the TLDs, even TLDs that have been launched recently have a level playing field. Therefore, there has been a major change in trend in this month’s report.

Here are the percentage shares of  the new gTLD adds for the month of February.

The impact of promo offers is clearly visible on the top new gTLDs. .TOP and .ACCOUNTANT have climbed up the charts for February. .SPACE  continues to be in our top 15 gTLD list while .TOP seizes the largest chunk which is nearly half of the total percentage share followed by .ACCOUNTANT.

The reason contributing to the outstanding performance of .TOP and .ACCOUNTANT is due to the massive domain promos that are running throughout the month. .TOP & .ACCOUNTANT are running at promotional offers of 93% and 91% respectively. .

.WIN  & .LINK are at par for this month’s report contributing to 5% each of the domain registrations. We are running a promotional offer across all our programs for .WIN & .LINK at a staggering 91% & 75% off respectively. Apart from that, we are running a special promo in the China market for .WIN till the end of February. These could be, the contributing factors for why .WIN has entered the charts standing at number 3 in our new gTLDs list.

Radix Registry’s .SPACE and .ONLINE stand at positions 5 & 6. .SPACE is on a promotional sale of $6.99 $1.69 while .ONLINE is priced at $30.99 $7.99 for this month.

We turned a decade old on the 17th of February this year. Undoubtedly the folks at ResellerClub are extremely enthused regarding this milestone. Therefore, we are running massive promos owing to our ‘Big Birthday Bash’. The ‘Big Birthday Bash’ promos received an unprecedented response via our multiple marketing channels and are a major factor contributing to the spike in registrations of the TLDs mentioned above.

We currently have promos on a bunch of other TLDs. You can take a look at the entire here. If you’ve got any queries regarding the report, let us know in the comments section below.

Top 6 Design Trends Coming Your Way in 2019!

We’ve turned over another leaf in the calendar & like every new year, we’re bombarded with lists of Top Fashion Styles for 2019, Biggest Mistakes of 2018, What to look forward to in 2019 & the like. For an industry such as ours, few things get us more pumped than striking web designs that seem to change the worldwide web. We’re no different when it comes to ‘listings’ and we’re stoked to be penning down the Design Trends of 2019 Coming Your Way. If you share our enthusiasm, brace yourselves for the awesome design elements you’ll read through this article:

1) Video: The New Hero Image: While 2018 saw websites use clear, high definition, impressive images on their homepage screen, 2019 brought the video back in a new style – full screen, interactive, extreme clarity, fast loading. High speed internet connectivity and video plug-ins have made it easier for the comeback of the video. We expect to see a lot more of such “movie-like experiences” on upcoming websites. What’s even cooler about these videos are that they’re interactive – allowing for better user experience.

This website below allows for an interaction like no other. It allows the user to view a concert from different view points, giving him full control over the camera angle he wants to use.

2) The Hamburger Menu: While this trend made its debut in 2015, the feature is only becoming more popular and has stayed with us all along, even in 2019. As users are accustomed to mobile sites and responsive websites, this design style has crept into the desktop websites, simplifying navigation by hiding it under a hamburger menu.

3) Flat Designs: In 2015, Google spent huge dollars to change their logo to a flat, bolder, cleaner, sans-serif typeface. Why? Because it helped reduce the size of the logo file on sites by more than half and it was easier to read on palm-sized devices. 2019 still dominates the flat design space.

Hand-in-hand with the Flat Design is the Material Design – clean, modernistic, UX focused design. This type of uses shadow effects & movement concepts to make designs look more realistic.

4) Card Layouts: Thanks to sites like Pinterest, card layouts are overtaking the web. The reason for the success of such a layout is probably the bite-size information they provide at a glance for multiple items/products. The rectangle content “containers” also easily rearrange themselves to fit any device.

5) Motion Animation: As users, we love motion. Our eyes are naturally drawn to motion animation & designers have started to capitalise on this, experimenting with modular scrolling, slo-mo animation, dynamic charts, progress bars & buttons, fold effects, page header transitions etc. You can see the whole list here.

6) Return of the Serifs on Screen

We’ve all heard, sans serifs look amazing on the screen as they are easily readable, whereas serifs are just for prints. But aren’t we the ones who are trendsetters? 2019 is a gamechanger in the font space with the reemergence and revamp of the font used to attract the users to read more and Serifs is the one that takes all the credit! Be it wedge serifs with a bold look or the rounded serifs like on the MailChimp website, serifs are here to stay for a long time.
