New gTLD Report – April 2016

The month of April brought along a few surprises. It was awesome to see that some of the best performing domain extensions are just about 2 years old. We’re excited that the new gTLDs are catching up & with such speed! Let’s take a look at the highlights for the month:

1) .TOP is No.1 : Great job on the .TOP! The domain has done extremely well & .TOP emerged on top (pun intended ;)) with more than 50% of the total domain registrations for the month being for .TOP. This could be due to the huge promotion of 93% off on the popular extension. .TOP has stayed in the top 5 TLDs list for the last couple of months.

2) .XYZ is back: .XYZ has seen an interesting trend. The extension was at the top of the list in the beginning of the year, moved to the 15th spot in February and fell even lower in March. The good news is the TLD has made its way back up to the 2nd spot and this is because the TLD which wasn’t on promo since January had a 90% discount this month which accounts for the huge leap in registrations. If you haven’t had the chance to get .XYZ on promo, now’s the time to grab it before the offer ends!

.XYZ turns 2 this year & it’s a huge achievement how well the extension has been doing.

3) .CLUB takes #3 spot: .CLUB which did not feature in the Top 15 since January has made its way to the No. 3 spot. While there was a promotion on the TLD since January, the price further dropped from $8.49 to $2.99. This 64% drop seems to have contributed to the increase in registrations.

4) .DOWNLOAD makes the list: The extension slipped below the Top 15 mark in the month of March but has picked up in April. It’s common to assume that a long TLD might not do too well but this does not seem to be the case here. Relevance seems to be of greater importance in the case of the .DOWNLOAD.

5) Domains Sale Week impact: In the last week of April, we ran a flash sale on a couple of popular traditional TLDs like the .COM, the .BIZ the .ORG and while it’s common to assume that count of the new gTLDs would drop as a result of the increase in traditional TLDs count, the results were quite the opposite.

We did a comparison of the count of new gTLDs in Domain Sale week versus the week before the sale and here are the results:

The month of April brought along a few surprises New gTLD Report – April 2016

In line with our expectations, while the traditional TLD count rose, the new gTLD count also rose by 20% leading us to assume that there is considerable demand for the new gTLDs & a new market for it!

Here’s a graphical representation of the whole new gTLD report for the month of April.

Let us know your thoughts on the same & if you think you can predict the No. 1 TLD for the month of May, we’d love to hear from you in the comments section below.

How to Pitch Your Web Design Service to Major Clients

Most of us love our jobs and what we do and often find it challenging yet fun but roping in our marquee clients is also critical to our business. You maybe fantastic at designing but if you can’t get in the big clients, your service doesn’t get the credit and work it deserves. Pitching to the big clients is quite an art. We’ve put together a couple of things you can do to bag the biggies!

1) Avoid Haggling on Price: When you’re working with big clients, it’s important not to compete on the price. While this may work with micro-clients or smaller projects, it’s quite the opposite for bigger organisations. Major clients or bigger organisations usually assume if you’re pitching to them, that you have the resources, the skill, the infrastructure, the man-power, fixed employee salaries and an office to do business and so have a big enough budget for it.

Quote high. Higher than usual. A low quote can mean you’re either inexperienced or inadequate to handle and manage the project. Be careful not to quote too high either. A reasonably high quote is a good starting point. Be realistic.

Most of us love our jobs and what we do and often find it challenging yet fun but roping i How to Pitch Your Web Design Service to Major Clients

2) Pitch Results not Potential: Many businessmen and business owners have had negative experiences with designers who promise potential but fail to produce the desired results. Unfortunately, this scene is all too common and portrays even good designers negatively. To overcome this negative barrier & get your client to believe in your work, pitch results rather than potential. By this we mean, share portfolios of websites that you have created that aren’t appealing just visually but designs that are highly effective.

Focus on your specialty while pitching. You know the designing best & are the only one who can provide an overview of the process and your approach to your trade. Giving details and value add lets the client know you’re confident of what you do.

Most of us love our jobs and what we do and often find it challenging yet fun but roping i How to Pitch Your Web Design Service to Major Clients

3) Prepare Samples: Along with promising results rather than potential, show the client you’ve done it before. That you’re not just an empty promise but you deliver. Take samples along with you when you go to pitch. Because of the resistance to design as mentioned earlier, companies tend to budget lower for web designing to avoid losing money. Showing some samples beforehand is a great way to break the myth about designers and show you’re worth the money. When you show your samples, be sure to mention statistics like how your design has increased conversions (See How to Create Calls-to-Action to Increase conversions), how visits have increased, how you’ve reduced customer service costs etc. This assures the client that you’ve done it before and you will do it again.

Most of us love our jobs and what we do and often find it challenging yet fun but roping i How to Pitch Your Web Design Service to Major Clients

4) Professionalism is key: If you’re going to pitch to a professional, make sure you’re professional yourself. Many small agencies and designers pitch to big clients but fail due to lack of managerial resources and size. You can create the illusion of a highly professional service by hiring an assistant to take your calls, manage projects like they’re routine. Bring dignity, success & results to the table. If you look like you’re on the same page as them, they’re more likely to give you a shot.

Most of us love our jobs and what we do and often find it challenging yet fun but roping i How to Pitch Your Web Design Service to Major Clients

5) Focus on the long-term: With single projects and smaller assignments, this might not be of much importance. However, with big clients, it’s important to build relationships and convey your ability, your skill and your turn around time (for changes) to show long-term interest. This establishes that you are reliable and understand the client’s requirements. This is a huge positive especially if you have a chance to bag more projects with the brand in the long run.

Most of us love our jobs and what we do and often find it challenging yet fun but roping i How to Pitch Your Web Design Service to Major Clients

6) Go prepared: Lastly but perhaps most importantly, do your homework before you meet the client. Learn the strengths and weaknesses of their existing designs & go prepared with solutions & ideas. While small brands may be easily impressed by this preparation, big brands already assume this to be your modus operandi. They already expect you to know the brand, what they do as well as know their competition. Preparation is the foremost part of your pitching.

Most of us love our jobs and what we do and often find it challenging yet fun but roping i How to Pitch Your Web Design Service to Major Clients

Follow these 6 simple things the next time you’re heading out for a client meeting with a big brand & they’re sure to be impressed!

If you’ve got more ideas on how to bag the big clients, share it with us and our readers in the comments section below! We’d love to hear from you.

Confiança e Autoridade do Domínio – 23.87%

Eu juro!

Make your website up to 1000% faster with ResellerClub Shared Hosting!

We are pleased to announce Varnish which is now integrated with some of our shared hosting servers. Varnish is a web accelerator which allows websites to sustain very high traffic and load pages exponentially faster by caching static and dynamic content (Images, CSS, plain HTML, etc). It can speed up a website by up to 1000%. Varnish is pre-activated on all new websites added on our Linux Shared Hosting as well as certain servers.

You can easily toggle the option of caching on and off as per your requirement. Just log in to your control panel to learn how to manage Varnish. Older accounts and more granular customization of caching will be available very soon. Learn more about Varnish Cache.

Benefits of Varnish Powered Hosting

  • Makes websites with static content, fly!
  • Makes your popular CMS’s (WordPress/Drupal) almost 3-10x faster to load
  • Handle many more requests via the same package. No need to upgrade to sustain more traffic
  • Reduce client wait time considerably which helps retention of your clients
  • Faster website results into your website being more visible to search engines which increase the chances of your website moving up in ranking on search engines

We tested the loading performance for a few popular PHP – mySQL apps on one of our shared servers and were able to draw out a few comparisons. You could have a look at the graph below for more details:

We are pleased to announce Varnish which is now integrated with some of our shared hosting Make your website up to 1000% faster with ResellerClub Shared Hosting!

The time shown is the total time taken in seconds for serving 100 requests with 10 concurrent threads. The network from where the test was run had an average latency of 236 ms to the destination server.

Please Note

If your site serves dynamic content, caching might result in wrong data being shown on your website. In such a scenario, just log into your cPanel and disable Varnish for the affected domain name. We will soon be enabling Varnish cache life value and an option of manually flushing your Varnish cache. Sites running on https will not be served via Varnish. They will continue getting served by Apache directly.

Develop Your Website To Boost SEO Rankings

Web Development is not everyone’s cup of tea. Neither is SEO. Getting the two to work together is a super-power, only you as a developer have. In our previous post, titled ‘Common Web Design Issues to Stay Clear of for Good SEO‘, we shared some basic tips for good SEO. On the heels of that post, we give you some more great ways you as a developer can optimise your website to the fullest to be picked up by search engines.

1) Focus on your Website’s USP: Sure, your website can be about multiple things but it’s important to have a single thought or primary subject integral to your brand / organisation. A good idea is to do a bit of keyword research so you get an idea of the direction you should build in.

2) Include your keyword wherever possible: Once you’ve narrowed down on your single idea, try and include it on your domain name, page titles, taglines, blog content, image captions, description content, taglines, site titles and wherever else you deem fit. The more the presence of your keyword, the more likely it is to be picked up by a search engine.

However, including too many keywords or ‘keyword stuffing’ could get you in trouble. Strike a balance between the two for good SEO.

3) Link Your Pages: Intentionally link your internal pages for better SEO. Make sure you cross-link your banners, homepage links, images.

Link also from third party websites for better ranking.

4) Mind Your Permalink Structure: A URL like www.books.com/7Tfg8eG=erj=#4565 does not only look unprofessional, it is also bad for SEO. Instead of numbers and random letters, add keywords in your URL structure.

So, instead, you can have a URL structure like www.book.com/top-10-books.

5) Get Rid of Flash & the Like: Do away with anything that slows your website page load speed. This can include Flash files, players, graphics, unnecessary plugins. Instead, use HTML 5 which is SEO friendly and does not slow down your load speed

6) Keep Your Website up to date: Make sure you update your website frequently. Sites with dynamic content tend to rank higher than those with static content.

7) Link to Other Websites: Linking to other pages in the link list, reference list or resource page tells the search engine that you are a credible source or a trusted authority on a subject. Of course, we suggest you link sparingly as you will be directing your visitors to another site.

Getting the two to work together is a super Develop Your Website To Boost SEO Rankings

8) Keep Your Domain Name Steady: The age of your URL is a factor for search ranking. If you’re going to frequently change your domain URL or create new domains for various content, your website won’t get the results it deserves. Instead of creating new websites for various products or projects, just create microsites within your main websites.

Design Your Calls-To-Action to Increase Conversions: Here’s How

Calls-to-action play a key part in helping convert visitors to leads or sales on any website you design. It’s all in the messaging, design and the placement. The type of site, the target audience and the desired action can give you a direction on how best to design these buttons. We tell you how you can design some kicka$$ calls-to-action to immediately convert your visitors into clients in just 3 pointers!

1) Know which all buttons you can have: A website can have various calls-to-action depending on the aim of the button. You can experiment with different buttons to get the desired results. You can design your call-to-action depending on the kind of product you’re offering your visitors:

  • For an online e-commerce platform an ‘Add to Cart‘ is sensible for customer purchase for a product available online. If however, you have multiple products displayed, a ‘Buy Now‘ makes more sense than an ‘Add to Cart’.
  • If your aim is to increase registrations for a program, you can also offer a ‘10 Day Free Trial‘ to test if sampling works
  • You can have an ‘Enroll Now‘ for a webinar followed by a ‘Sign Up Now‘ option giving the visitor an option to still enroll for the webinar without signing up. A ‘Sign Up’ is a direct call-to-action.
  • If the purpose of your website is to disseminate information or has a brochure interface, a ‘Learn More‘ or a ‘Download Now‘ (for a guide or manual) is a good call-to-action to have, followed then by a ‘Sign Up‘ if your aim is to garner leads form it.
  • In case your service or product has an offline deliverable, a call-to-action like a ‘Book My Seat‘ for an event / concert is apt. The online action creates a desired offline experience.

A good way to further experiment with the buttons you can have is to:

  • Analyse the devices your traffic is coming from: If your website has traffic from mobile devices, it could be useful to have a call-to-action like ‘Call Now‘ or ‘Give a Missed Call‘. If a lot of your traffic is from social media, it’s good to have a ‘Share‘ icon for your visitors to share your program or event for others to see.
  • Customise Calls-to-action based on where your traffic is coming from: Experiment with different variations of calls-to-action from different landing pages. For example, at a Checkout page, a ‘Add Combo‘ or ‘Frequently Seen Together‘ call-to-action gives your customer an option to add another product/ products. After the transaction is complete, you can have a ‘See Similar Products’ or ‘Also Buy’ call-to-action so your customer can browse more of your products rather than exiting the page when the transaction is complete.

Here are some good calls-to-action you can have.

2) Know where you can place them: It’s important for your calls-to-action to be the stand-out part of your website which means optimising your negative space. A good design will incorporate blank space between your content and button and maintain a balance. Here’s what you can follow:

  • Maintain enough space around the buttons to avoid clutter

  • Go with the Rule of Thirds to determine the amount of space you need
  • Negative space gives room for your buttons to stand out.
  • Pick a distinguished area to place your button

3) Know the Content You want to Use:

  • Go with first person speech. For example, instead of “Buy Your Hosting Here” , go with “Get My Hosting Now
  • You can also create a sense of urgency with the text like ‘Buy for $50 $25‘ or ‘Get 50% off TODAY‘. These calls-to-action result in pretty impressive click through rates
  • The bait word “FREE” is quite an enticing word. Use it in your button to get a better result. For example, “Get My FREE e-Book
  •  “Click triggers” like testimonials, Anxiety suppressing info (No credit card required, Cancel Anytime), List of Benefits are all useful information to include under a button

  • Get creative. Use “unconventional” call-to-action texts. Huemor‘s homepage website uses harmless reverse psychology to get any visitor to click on the call-to-action. Let’s face it… this makes you want to click on the button!

Ctrl+F5 Bengaluru 2016: In a Nutshell

Our first Web Designer/Developer focused event Ctrl+F5, Bangalore was surely a lot of fun! Elite Web Professionals from all across the Southern States of India made it to the Sheraton Grand to meet our Industry’s Tech Leaders and other like-minded Pros. Leading figures such as Ninad Rawal – Directi, Shridhar Luthria – ResellerClub, Navneet Kaushal – PageTraffic as well as Ravi Pal from Endurance International Group, were eager to share their thoughts on designing & building efficient and fabulous-looking websites.

To sum it up, our speaker sessions aimed to:

  1. Evolve from the linear approach towards web design and web development
  2. Get a wider perspective on how the industry is performing & growing
  3. Help improve your offerings that deliver more value to your clients

We opened up the registration desk at 10am and soon the hall was thronging with excited Web Design enthusiasts who got started with socializing over a hot cuppa! That gave us a huge dose of adrenaline as our belief in the need for such a platform to bring Web Design & Development professionals together felt thoroughly vindicated.  Elite Web Professionals from all across the Southern States of India made it to the Shera Ctrl+F5 Bengaluru 2016: In a Nutshell

The first session of the day was by Directi’s very own Ninad Raval. Here’s a blow-by-blow look at what went down at Ctrl+F5!

Ninad Raval: Director of Product & Design, Directi

Topic: ‘Design with Context’

Ninad spoke about how design must undoubtedly be user-friendly, intuitive and at the same time, make no compromise when it comes to aesthetics. He adopted a structured approach which he later revealed he uses to induct new employees in his team, to cover various prime aspects of UI/UX.

Navneet Kaushal: CEO & Founder, PageTraffic

Topic: ‘Search Engine Friendly for Web 3.0 – Why & How?’

Navneet’s topic was about how great looking websites can get great traffic as well by optimizing for search engine crawlers. He spoke about a typical conversation between clients and SMBs in context of website building in India – how clients’ lack of understanding of technical SEO could hinder efforts to drive relevant traffic to their websites.

He hit the right chord when he said ‘many people do not recognize the value of a website because they fail to do what’s needed to drive traffic to it’ which left most of the crowd nodding in agreement. To help address this concern, Navneet advocated that every web designer attempt to have a brief, but clear discussion elucidating the advantages of SEO with their clients. Navneet followed this up with a walkthrough of search engine ranking improvement. By the end of the session, it was quite clear that bridging this gap in how a client values a website vs how we web professionals do, could be the catalyst in seeing sustainable growth in the online presence market in India.

Shridhar Luthria: General Manager & Business Head, ResellerClub

Topic: ‘Make My Logo Bigger’

“Make my Logo Bigger” is a refrain that the design community is very used to hearing, be it from clients or from their own marketing teams & Shridhar quite deliberately picked this iconic one-liner as his topic. He analyzed the common problems faced by Web Designers – both in client-designer communication as well as in the threats posed by the competition and commoditization of design. Shridhar’s list of problems & neat steps that could help the Web Design bosses turn around these threats to opportunities was received very well by the crowd.

A common thread throughout Shridhar’s session was how Web Designers could actually play a complete web presence consultant to their clients by suggesting the right mix of products and services that could deliver the best possible results. In this regard the question of new gTLDs usage surfaced and sure enough, Shridhar had statistics that made a clear case for adoption of the appropriate extensions for every scenario. Our Registry partners for the Bengaluru edition of the event, Radix & .ONLINE got a mention as well with free domain names on offer for the attendees!

Ravi Pal: Vice President of Engineering, Endurance International Group

Topic: Design and Technology – BFF

Ravi’s session was a radically different take on the industry that was aimed at breaking down the silos that exist within the Web Professionals’ community. He highlighted the evolution of Design and Technology as separate entities separately for a long period which has created the need for a harmonizing layer between them. He emphasized that Technology and Design were inseparable and complementary to each other and followed it up with recent changes in both technology and design principles that made it imperative that both work together to give the optimal user experience.

The speaker sessions were followed by an open floor networking hour during which all attendees and speakers actively engaged in follow-up conversations stemming from the stimulating ideas that the day thus far had thrown up. In summary, it was a fantastic experience for us and we are deeply humbled by the knowledge, passion and enthusiasm displayed by each one of you from the Web Design and Web Development community.
