How to limit Bandwidth Usage on your Website Improve Load Speeds

User Experience simply refers to a user’s interaction with your website. How can you deliver the best possible user experience? By making the flow as natural and intuitive as possible. A website has good UX if it’s easy to use and meets the needs of the user.

For an e-commerce website, a great user experience is essential if you want your customer to:

  • Make a purchase
  • Return to your website
  • Recommend it to others

User Experience is arguably the single most important thing in e-Commerce. A functionally rich website coupled with ease use leaves the user with a “good experience”. But is that all? No, consider on how to limit bandwidth usage & load speed. If Amazon were to have amazing design, great functionality and superb user experience but couldn’t load fast enough, would you stay? In all probability, no. Website load speed is critical to user experience.

For an information website, user experience will be enhanced if there is:

  • Ease of finding information
  • Logical flow to the website
  • Help is readily available through FAQs etc.

Here are a few ways you can limit bandwidth usage & improve load speeds on your website:

1. Choose superfast CDN – The CDN providers you choose is key to load speed. Make sure you pick a provider who has data servers closest to your service. This decreases latency and improves image load speed. Superfast CDN hosting for static content will boost your image loading speed.

2. Caching for static and dynamic content: Caching captures your last known information and displays it to a user instead of freshly loading a page with its images, content, text, videos which increases load speed. An alternative is to build in caching for your website – gifs and videos included. Caching heavy, less important elements of your webpage and using caching like Varnish enables you to boost your website load speed.

3. Build Ajax calls of peripheral elements: Save bandwidth, server time and improve speed with this short-cut. Opt to build Ajax calls for elements that are not critical to your website to make it available on-demand for your user instead of loading separate pages each time. This not only enables your website to load faster but also consumers less of your users’ bandwidth.

4. Optimization such as Minifying Jquery, HTML, CSS: Clean your code. Eliminate coding in unnecessary calls which increase load time each time there is a command. Install Jquery.min on your own server – it’s much lighter and smaller & will certainly decrease your load time.

5. Optimization of SQL queries: Optimize your queries so as to reduce the number of steps your user will take to get the results he wants. Some tips you can follow are to:

  • Only retrieve data you absolutely need
  • Index properly
  • Do away with correlated subqueries
  • Check your codes before you use them especially if they’re ready-made/ borrowed codes
  • Try to avoid dynamic SQL

6. Opt to use multiple servers: To reduce the usage of bandwidth and RAM of a single server which would reduce your load speed, use cluster of servers as load balancers instead. This is especially useful for websites with high traffic.

7. Optimize your server: Regularly run crons to flush out cache, in-line scripts and clean your servers. Think of the function of the apps you use to clean your mobiles without which, your phone speed would reduce – Clean Master, CCleaner, Startup Manager.

8. Build a good database architecture: Organise your tables and structure correctly so your commands can read and write correctly. A mixed-up or hard to read architecture only increases your load speed.

Many high traffic, well-known websites like Amazon, Flipkart, Google, Facebook use these web development techniques to increase or sustain their high load speed. For websites like those, business runs on the sheer volume of traffic and load speed is critical.

Which IDE do you use for your Web Development projects?

Whether you’re a Web Developer or a Full Stack programmer, a good IDE (Integrated Development Environment) or (in simpler versions, with minimal programming features) a word processor is a must-have on any computer. My aim through this post is to focus on the key features that you as a web developer should look for in your IDE.

The right IDE will allow you to consolidate basic tools that you need as a developer to write and test a particular program. It helps you edit, compile or interpret and debug code as well as manage it incrementally through a single GUI(Graphical User Interface). It will also let you access software development tools from anywhere in the world, from any compatible device; and ease of collaboration amid geographically dispersed developers.

When you start learning how to code, it can make a difference which editor you use, so if you’re still using the regular Notepad it’s about time you got yourself an upgrade.

Choosing the right IDE will help:

  • Pave your path as a developer
  • Get work done quickly and efficiently
  • Allow you to engineer your ideas to without having to focus on the tool itself

It also enables tabbed editing so you can have multiple documents open at once in a single window. It provides you with the following benefits. Notepad++ supports 12 programming languages including Batch, C++, JavaScript, HTML, CSS and more.

Notepad++ is extremely simple and provides you with a wonderful coding experience here’s why :-

  • Effortless and straightforward: It is one of the simplest word processors to use yet quite sophisticated and straightforward
  • Line Numbering: Lets you pinpoint errors and changes across various locations in the code with ease, associating each line with a number, so you don’t need to look for it manually
  • Syntax Highlighting: Syntax highlighting helps you view the various elements of a code in  colours specified by you. So whether doing a quick edit or viewing of source code – it simplifies so you know exactly what’s what
  • Split screen editing and synchronized scrolling: This feature lets you compare and reason out various codes or revisions of the same code side by side

To start, it is a clean, functional, and fast code editor. Its simplicity isn’t just skin-deep – dig in just a bit, and you’ll find yourself immersed in plug-ins, clever auto-completion tricks, and more.

When it comes to IDE’s Sublime Text is one of the best, here’s why :-

  • Linter Behavior: Detecting errors has never been easier. A linter is a tool that flags suspicious usage or an error in a source code. Beyond this it also helps performing a static analysis of the same
  • Auto Indentation: Applying this command helps auto indent your current file (with smart indent options). Nothing better than a code that’s neat, clean and easily readable
  • Emmet integration: Emmet is a plugin that expands abbreviations, displaying them in the editor status bar. This reduces chances of any errors and paces up your workflow by  creating placeholders for you
  • Auto suggestion: This tool provides you with a list of most probable commands to choose from, also providing a description on each command that let you select apt
  • Distraction free mode: Sublime aligns the text to the center of your screen and also blocks out all other notifications and popups while letting you focus on your  code

Sublime Text is an extremely powerful tool. You’re bound to love the slick user interface, extraordinary features and amazing performance. However, with all its benefits, this word processor comes with a price but it may be well worth it.

The Verdict

From my perspective, which is to say the perspective of a beginner, a good IDE is one that allows me to dive in and start coding, while also giving me room to grow and get more experience as part of a broader community.

It also is something that I spend a major chunk of my time on so it’s imperative that I have access to tweak its look and feel according to my preferences. If it takes care of many functions and makes coding convenient – nothing like it!

While all the above mentioned IDE’s have their own plus points in place, here are some questions you might want to consider before selecting one that fits all your needs perfectly :-

Novas Estensões de Domínios – O Novo Normal

Quase um ano atrás escrevi um artigo chamado Domain Reselling – Ushering in the new gTLDs falando sobre como as marcas vem lentamente se afastando de domínios tradicionais, como .COM e de fato estão começando a aderirem as novas extensões de domínios, também conhecidos como gTLDs (exemplos: .online, .tech, .top, .agency). Na época citei exemplos de empresas famosas como: Google, Reliance, entre outros impérios multibilionários que estão tomando este mesmo caminho. Pois é, um ano depois, estou ainda mais convencido sobre a popularidade destes novos gTLDs.

O que me convenceu? Simples. Tenho associado que startups, pequenas ou médias empresas que estão em expansão ou estão num crescimento acelerado, já vem utilizando os novos gTLDs. Vejam abaixo casos de empresas ainda não tão conhecidas, que adotaram os novos gTLDs com bastante sucesso:

 

Caso 1: Opus Events Agency

A Opus Events Agency foi fundada em 2000, fazendo conferências e eventos corporativos. Eles sempre acreditaram em trabalhar sem limites para alcançar o sucesso. E é por isto que a empresa teve um enorme crescimento de 86% entre 2011 e 2014, ganhando um lugar na lista das maiores empresas.

A Agência decidiu afastar seu longo e desajeitado nome de domínio para um novo gTLD que se encaixa em seu perfil. Eles simplificaram seu domínio, utilizando apenas: www.opus.agency

 

Caso 2: Harmony Healthcare Solutions

Esta empresa de assistência médica executiva passou de ‘harmonyhealthcaresolutions.com’ apenas para ‘harmony.solutions’. Eles ainda pagam uma taxa anual de US$ 25 para manter o domínio .COM para proteger a marca.

A Harmony Solutions não somente aderiu a ideia de um novo gTLD, mas também garantiu os domínios harmony.expert, harmony.consulting e harmony.healthcare para possíveis utilizações no futuro.

 

Caso 3: Consumer Electronics Show (CES)

A Consumer Electronics Show é uma feira organizada pela Consumer Technology Association, realizada em Las Vegas. O evento é uma vitrine de várias tecnologias e novos produtos na indústria de eletrônicos de consumo.

Quase duas semanas atrás, CES decidiu também aderir a um novo domínio e então passaram de ces.com para ces.tech. Eles escolheram este novo gTLD para explicitar a paixão por tecnologia que representam!

 

Conclusão:

Estes são apenas três casos de utilização das novas extensões de domínios, mas vejo que esta lista já está crescendo rapidamente. Constantemente tenho realizado estudos sobre a forma como estes novos gTLDs estão crescendo no mercado global. E isto apenas está acontecendo, pois as empresas estão optando pelo incomum, pelo caminho da inovação.

Neste último ano, desde que escrevi meu último texto para o blog, o Google lançou sua nova Venture Alphabet Inc com 0 domínio .XYZ e tivemos recordes de venda para esta extensão neste período.  Com certeza, a maior conquista é ver que novas empresas ou empresas menores já estão aderindo a este movimento. Sejam bem vindos novos gTLDs, “O novo normal”.

Ctrl+F5 Mumbai: A Recap

Ctrl+F5 in association with .BIZ and .CO took place on 2nd July at Hyatt Regency in Mumbai & what an event it was! Not only was the turnout excellent but the insights, learnings and take away were especially meaningful. If you were at the event, you probably agree but if you weren’t, we’d still like to share with you all that happened.

We opened registrations at 10am and by 11am, the hall was full for Ninad Raval’s session. Ninad (Director of Product &  Design, Directi) spoke on the topic ‘Design with Context’ covering a methodical approach to design to ensure every aspect of a given problem statement is factored into designing without compromises on aesthetics which is a common challenge for web designers. As Ninad put it, it is our ‘responsibility’ rather than our job as designers to do 3 things:

  • To cultivate empathy
  • To make peoples’ lives easy
  • To make a difference

It takes more than just a good idea, great engineering and a fantastic visual design for good UX. It’s important for us as designers to understand our users, their tasks and their context.

Session 2 was taken by Crystal Peterson (Director Registry Services, Neustar) whose session was titled ‘The Evolution of Naming’. When there are over 500 gTLDs to choose from and new ones cropping up daily, finding a domain name to fit your business and the right time to choose a name is a challenge.

Crystal Peterson talked about the evolution of the naming business and the importance of knowing how to recommend and build on the ‘non-com’ domains.

We broke for lunch & during our meal, we were able to meet with the speakers, professionals from different backgrounds and others from the design and development industry.

We resumed the sessions with Santosh Gannavarapu (Co-Founder, Sokrati) who gave us some great tips and curated hacks on Digital Marketing to help stay a step ahead of competition. Here are some key points he touched on:

  • 75% of SMEs rate marketing as the biggest challenege
  • Businesses online make 49% more revenues
  • SMEs is a large base of affinity and loyalty
  • If you show SMEs your value, they will be your customers for life

  • Make your website faster & more responsive

Simran Talreja (Product Manager, Endurance International Group) concluded the event with her session on ‘A Practical Approach to Design Thinking‘. Simran took us beyond concepts to practically understand ways to apply design thinking to our everyday work & be equipped with the right set of tools and approaches to build fantastic products for clients. Some highlights:

  • Design Thinking is a human-centered approach to solving problems and often times Innovating
  • Designers and developers are not just building technology but building solutions for human beings
  • The process: Empathize > Define > Ideate > Prototype > Test
  • Empathizing through observation, interviewing & experiencing
  • Idealization involves coming up with a variety of solutions
  • Prototyping involves visualizing your ideas
  • Testing involves trying out high-resolution versions of your prototypes

How to increase open rate of your emails

Well, since you’re reading this, we’ve probably done a fine job of catching your attention. So you know you’re reading it from the right people!

In the age of digital media with almost everything online and yes, groceries and pets too, it’s essential to tap the email marketing channel the right way. And how can email marketing possibly translate into anything big, you ask? A well composed email to the right audience can be the 1st step to ensuring a customer base.

The relevance of emails has undergone a change over the years. The way an average user looks at emails and how much time he/she spends on an email has changed drastically. But that said, ‘email’ as a concept continues to flourish; every portal / platform we sign up for requires us to enter our email address. Ergo, email is very much here to stay and effective email marketing is possible. In the couple of seconds that users glance over at the mailer notification, you have to captivate their interest. Let us come back to this discussion in one of our following blogs.

With an ROI of 144%, email marketing is worth all your while and attention. But before you compose an impressive email and start thinking about the buzz it’s going to create, it helps to understand how to get your audience to open the mail.

As someone who regularly works on marketing emails, I have covered some aspects of sending an email that you might want to get right –

Subject line

It’s the prologue to your email and as they say ‘well begun is half done’.  A crisp, relevant subject line can save your email from being ‘marked as read’ and getting lost amid a bunch of other marketing emails. While a great subject line can be a lot of things, you must keep in mind the following:

  • Spam words – hurry, this is guaranteed to be a spam mail, you’ve been chosen for this once in a lifetime sham offer so call now and try now.  This and plenty of other annoying pleas work wonders at plummeting the open rate. Avoid.

  • THE PARADOX OF ALL CAPS – WHILE IT DOES ATTRACT ATTENTION, IT MIGHT MAKE YOUR READERS POLITELY RELOCATE THE MAIL TO THE JUNK BOX

  • Personalize it, Mr xyz – addressing the mail to someone indicates that it’s relevant. It definitely merits interest and the readers might want to check what’s on the other side

  • Generate curiosity – Without running into hundreds of characters, let out the amount of information that’s just right. And just right to generate curiosity and not sound vague.

  • Do not sound like a call centre employee pitching a boring product – if the subject line is not pertinent, exciting, or catchy, let the email rest in your ‘draft’ folder

Be careful with the ‘from name’ as well; it’s often more prominent than the subject line itself.

Timing of the email

If you have a huge subscriber base (perhaps across countries), be mindful of the local time and send when the user is expected to be checking mails. Usually Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays are the best days to send promotional emails

Now if I receive this weekend offer mail on Wednesday morning or Friday night, I’m probably going to miss / forget it

Frequency of sending emails

List fatigue can kill the buzz around your emails. We’re sure you’ve got the best content writers but don’t bombard your readers with emails or other forms of communication. 2-3 emails per week is a good average, any lower than 2 a month and your reader base might be looking you up on Google the next time

Double opt in

This gives you a subscriber list that looks forward to, or at least doesn’t mind emails from you. It also helps you understand your target audience and its behavior better

Content really is king

The importance that Content marketing has gained is testimony to the importance of good, clear and useful content. Great copy in one mailer can help improve open rate statistics of subsequent mailers. Needless to say, you have to maintain the quality. Connect with your readers and give them what they’d like to read.

It’s okay (and at times important) to build a relationship with your readers over mails, you may also keep it informal depending on your industry. However, do not indulge in too many internet slangs, it can get quite annoying and incomprehensible.

Visual appeal

Coming to the email itself, you need to have a structure in place and make it visually appealing. Make the important announcements / offers stand out. The goal is not only to get your readers to open the email, but also to come back to it. Remember, open rate also derives from repeat opens. So if it’s a shabby / irrelevant mail they’re looking at, they won’t come back to it and probably won’t even check another mail from you.

Last but not the least (please don’t use such clichés in your mailers) – we cannot emphasize enough on the importance of impeccable language, with equal regard to both grammar and punctuation.

Let’s start with the most confusing. So WordPress itself is a free, open source content management system. Essentially, it’s software that allows people to create, organize, and update websites without having to manually code every page.

The WordPress team is always hard at work with new updates, patches, and security adjustments. And for good reason. Because of WordPress’s prevalence and open source nature, the platform is always under attack.

WordPress.com and WordPress.org are not the same, but they are similar

Let’s start with the most confusing. So WordPress itself is a free, open source content management system. Essentially, it’s software that allows people to create, organize, and update websites without having to manually code every page.

Now, WordPress essentially comes in two forms.

First, there is WordPress.com. WordPress.com is a blog hosting service not entirely different from Blogger. It allows a person to setup a free website that operates on a custom version of the WordPress software. This version is limited in what themes and plugins it can use.

A WordPress.com website also cannot be transferred to another host. It’s a bit of an out of the box, package deal.

WordPress.org, on the other hand, is the home of the full, open source WordPress software. If a company is building you a WordPress website, this is what they’re using. This what the site you’re on right now is using.

With the WordPress.org software, you can do just about anything.

Thankfully this doesn’t happen as much as it did a few years ago, but for the longest time, when we told a client we build WordPress websites, their response would be something like “but I don’t want a blog. I want a website.”

As with the .com vs .org situation, there’s good reason for confusion.

WordPress has its roots in blogging. When it was first built, WordPress was mostly for blogging (WordPress.com is still primarily for blogging). And some of the biggest WordPress websites are primarily blogs.

But WordPress today is so much more than a blogging platform. Sure, it has a beautiful and easy to use blogging system built into it still, but there are hundreds of thousands of WordPress sites that don’t even utilize their blogging functionality.

It’s an interesting thing when you start talking website costs with businesses. We’ve met with people who have pretty terrible websites that they paid a lot of money for. As if they paid for a brand new Audi A3 and ended up with a mid-90’s Geo Metro.

On the other hand, we’ve had meetings with potential clients who want the digital equivalent of a NASA space shuttle, and then scoff at the idea that their dream website is going to cost them more than $1000.

The truth is giving a ballpark price of how much websites should cost is near impossible.

If you walked up to a contractor and asked how much it would cost for them to build you a house, they would not immediately turn to you and say “Oh, a house? That’ll be a flat fee of $100,000.”

They couldn’t possibly give you an accurate quote without asking additional questions.

Where will it be built? How many square feet? What materials should be used? How many bathrooms? How many bedrooms? How many garage stalls? How many horse stalls?

You know, if you’re the equestrian type.

It’s really no different for a website. Especially for businesses. A fully-featured e-commerce site that sells auto-parts internationally is going to be drastically different from a website for a local diner.

Your goals are different. Your needs are different. Your customers are different. And so, the price will be different.

For a custom website, it’s a question of hours

What you’re paying for with a customized website is largely the number of hours it takes to design, develop, populate, etc. There may be the need to buy plugins or extensions. You also need to factor in hosting and domain registration.

But the majority of cost is based on labor and hourly rate.

In theory, if you’re paying a higher hourly rate for your website, you should expect a better website. That doesn’t always turn out to be the case though.

Regardless, a fully featured customized website can be “expensive” in the generic sense. But when weighed against how valuable it can be for modern businesses, it can more than pay for itself.

Cookie-cutter, pre-built, and template websites

If you’re looking to get the most affordable website possible for a flat-ish fee, there are templates and pre-built websites out there you can purchase. Even these have a broad range in pricing.

Even still, you’ll need to buy a domain and host it. Also, if you’re not particularly web savvy, you’ll still need to bring on some professional assistance.

What are the Limitations?

While PhoneGap has changed the way apps are developed, there are limitations to the product:

  • PhoneGap uses WebView which is essentially a striped down version of a browser without the Chrome UI. In the iOS, the Java Script code on WebView cannot take advantage of the superior browser than the iPhone actually has since it is not JIT enabled
  • In the Android, the CSS rendering in WebView is not nearly as good as on the iOS
  • PhoneGap works well on the latest iOS due to the advanced capabilities of the operating system however, Android isn’t yet equipped with such features like WebSocket which may cause trobule if you’re developing across multiple platforms
  • Since WebView has memory limitations, it could prove to be difficult if your JavaScript is not optimised
  • Security can be a concern since the app runs inside WebView, allowing untrusted third-party codes to execute in the page which means the JavaScript downloader could have access to several devices and user privacy
