How to use OpenSSH on Linux

What is OpenSSH?

OpenSSH is a suite based on SSH (Secure Shell) protocol providing a secure network for services like remote login or remote file transfer. OpenSSH is also known as OpenBSD Secure Shell and was initially developed as a part of OpenBSD operating system.

What are the features of OpenSSH?

  1. OpenSSH is freely available for everyone, their code encourages reusing and auditing of the code.
  2. OpenSSH has a secure tunnel to forward remote TCP ports through strong encryption (3DES, Blowfish, AES, Arcfour).
  3. An ad hoc SOCKS (Secure Sockets) proxy server can be created using OpenSSH.
  4. OpenSSH provides secure communication.

Difference between SSH and OpenSSH

SSH OpenSSH

  • SSH is a closed source cryptographic network protocol.

  • OpenSSH is a free open source protocol based on SSH.

  • SSH was first released in the year 1995 as SSH-1 protocol, trying to replace TELNET, rlogin, ftp and rsh protocols.

 

 

  • OpenSSH was released in the year 1999, for developers wanting a free software version, the original 1.2.12 release of SSH was released under open source license.

  • Some SSH commands are:

    Ssh-keygen, ssh-copy-id, ssh-add, ssh-agent, scp, sftp and sshd

  • Some commands are:

    ssh, ssh-keygen, ssh-agent, ssh-keyscan,  scp, sftp and sshd

Requirements

  1. Root access to your server
  2. Terminal (Linux)

How to enable OpenSSH on Servers:

In order to get SSH on the server, we need to run the OpenSSH package. For example, Apache is a package and the daemon is httpd. Similarly, OpenSSH is installed on the server and you use this via SSH. At ResellerClub, OpenSSH is already installed and ready to use on all our Linux Hosting servers and Managed Servers and clients have a complete root access using it. And also Reseller Hosting as well as Shared Hosting.

Although OpenSSH comes pre-installed on various versions of Linux for both the client side as well as server side and is incorporated into many commercial products. However, if you still wish to check if it’s installed then we can run the following commands.

Using OpenSSH on Linux:

To install OpenSSH on Linux, we use Ubuntu as an Operating System on standalone PC.

For Ubuntu/Debian:

Step 1: To install OpenSSH on client side and server side

Type the following command in the terminal and wait till the packages are downloaded and installed.

sudo apt-get install -y openssh-server openssh-client

Step 2: Check if the service is running

Once OpenSSH has been installed you will need to check if the service is running properly or not, run the following command.

service sshd status

Step 3: Configuration

Before editing the configuration file, it is important that you make a copy of the original file in case of any mistake you can reuse this and have the proper settings in place.

sudo cp /etc/ssh/sshd_config /etc/ssh/sshd_config.original-copy

I added the original-copy suffix, so every time I see this file I know it is an original copy of the sshd_config file.

Step 4: Connecting to OpenSSH

  1. By default the service runs on TCP port 22, you can change the port as such: Port 13
  2. To have sshd allow public key-based login, modify the following line:

    PubkeyAuthentication yesIf the line is already present, then make sure it has not been commented.

  3. Restart your OpenSSH server so that the changes in the config file can take place.

    sudo /etc/init.d/ssh restart

  4. If you want to have your OpenSSH server display a nice login banner, then you can do so by modifying the contents of the issue.net file by

    Banner /etc/issue.net

How to Use the Power of Citations and Reviews to Improve Local Rankings

Local SEO is a lot different from SEO for a non-geo specific brand. Any SEO expert or practitioner will tell you how local SEO ranking factors keep on changing, making it difficult for businesses to leverage the power of top places on Google SERPs.

Understanding Citations

A citation is an online mention of your business name, address, and phone number (NAP). Consider citations as the equivalent of backlinks for your business website, just that NAP citations do not need to be hyperlinked to your website.

A mention of just your business name, without the address and phone number, is considered a partial citation, and not as beneficial as a complete citation. That’s why NAP is valued so much, because it becomes the ‘string’ that counts as a citation that Google values.

The best practices you need to follow to ensure NAP consistency are:

  • Citations help with local SEO are valuable only if they match the NAP of your website and your Google My Business page.
  • Focus on picking up a format of NAP that doesn’t have any quirkiness or unique elements.
  • Do a few Google searches for famous local businesses and see which name, address, and phone number formats they use.

Why Citations Rock?

Google uses citations as a factor for verifying the accuracy of the contact details of the business in their local business listings. Mismatching NAPs could confuse Google and cause it to either skip your listings, or show information that’s incorrect. On the contrary, if Google finds that dozens of websites mention the same NAP for your business, it’s all the more likely to include your NAP in its SERPs.

Business Directories for Citations

Here’s an action plan you can trust.

  • Get your Google My Business listing.
  • Make sure your My Business Profile is complete
  • Create an alternate email ID to create profiles on business directories; trust me, you need it, to stay safe from hundreds of spam mails every day.
  • Find a list of 50 (or better still, 100) online business directories; here’s a good source.
  • Find a freelancer or budget some time on your own to create at least 5 profiles every day (do this, and you’ll potentially have 150 citations in a month).
  • Also, look for niche specific business directories, such as Viator and TripAdvisor for touristy places, and Zomato for restaurants.

Beyond Directories

The common misconception going around in SEO spheres is that business directories are the sole source for getting citations. That’s untrue; there are several others, for instance:

  • Press releases
  • Profile pages
  • Question and answer sites
  • Article and guest post bylines
  • Forum signatures

Do new domain extensions affect SEO?

The truth is that domain names by themselves don’t have an inherent impact on the website’s SEO.  How do we know it? We asked Dallas based SEO expert Bill Hartzer. According to Bill, two newly registered domain names are given the same weight by search engines when it comes to organic rankings. So, if no other ranking criteria is considered, both have the same potential to rank high in organic search results. Google, in particular, has clearly specified how they treat domain names and new domain extensions on their Google Webmaster Blog. In this post, Google stated, ‘Overall, our systems treat new gTLDs like other gTLDs (like .com & .org). Keywords in a TLD do not give any advantage or disadvantage in search.’

On that note, did you know that Google recently purchased ‘business.site’ for its Google My Business program? Any small business that creates a one-page website through this program will get a BUSINESSNAME.business.site sub-domain name automatically.

Coming back to new domain extensions and SEO, it’s important to keep in mind that search engines consider hundreds of ranking factors to place one website over the other in search results. The number of these ranking factors is only going to increase and the their nature is only going to get more complicated with Artificial Intelligence being used in search engine algorithms.

Some of the key ranking factors for a website are:

  1. Backlinks from reputed, credible websites. A recent study from Stone Temple indicates that backlinks have a big role to play in improving SEO ranking. Getting backlinks, not just to your website’s home page but also to various internal pages and blog posts, gives a positive signal to search engines about the quality of your website.
  2. Along with backlinks, the anchor text (the blue, underlined, clickable text in a hyperlink) also has a significant role to play in improving SEO rankings. The more relevant the anchor text to the page it is linking to, the better it is for the SEO.
  3. The quality of content on your website also makes a big difference in all this. Fresh and original content is always good news for SEO.

What role does a domain name play in all this then?

A web page, even the ones that look like www.page49-78.html, can rank high in organic search results if they have the above 3 criteria working in their favor (along with various other ranking factors, of course). However, if www.page49-78.html showed up in your searches, would you click on it? The answer is no because you wouldn’t trust the link.  A good domain name, like www.mobile.store will encourage people to click on it. A domain name also works to your advantage in the context of anchor text. If the website www.mobile.store is backlinked to anchor text ‘mobile store’, it is a positive indication to the search engines about the quality of the website. So, a keyword-rich domain name can influence a website’s SEO ranking positively.

Should you choose a custom CMS for your new website?

Whether you need to establish a new web presence or redesign your current website, you need to have a content management system (CMS) for maintaining and updating your digital content. It’s critical to select the right CMS that best suits your needs, since after your initial design there is a good chance that it will be your most frequently used web maintenance tool.  But how do you make your choice?

There are many different types of CMS systems that are available for businesses to choose from. Most are template-based platforms that are more affordable, in addition to customized solutions offering unique benefits. Your decision will ultimately be based on which system fits your needs the best.

Customization possibilities

The most important feature that a custom CMS provides is the ability to build your platform according to your precise and exact specifications. An alternative to custom development is WordPress, which offers plugins to help meet the needs of individual businesses. However, plugins only provide limited functionality for a generalized platform.    

WordPress is used by nearly 60 per cent of websites as their core CMS software. However, it’s near impossible to create a platform that will meet your individual marketing, content and web needs.

  • Cost: Yes, a custom CMS does cost more than a template-based format. It requires an advanced and specific set of skills as well as lots more time to build a custom CMS, so you should expect to pay double at least (or more) for a custom website compared to a WordPress website.  
  • That’s why it’s important to decide what advantages are most important to you.
  • Speed: Given that a custom CMS will be designed to do precisely what you need it to do, it won’t be dragged down by any unnecessary bells and whistles. The code may be optimized in order to serve specific functions and increase the speed of your website.
  • Ease of use: To do their jobs, users only see what they actually need to see. An intuitive, well-written CMS may be easier to teach staff how to use compared to a more complex backend.
  • Support: Usually a custom CMS has dedicated in-house support from your developers. Therefore, usually problems are solved quickly.

What decision is right for you?

Before you can make a decision on a CMS to use, evaluate what your business needs are. Start by asking yourself the following questions:

  1. How large is the company? What number of end users will need access to the website?
  2. How important is price to you?
  3. What amount of time do you have available for implementing a new system?
  4. What degree of customization are you going to need?
  5. Are you planning on outsourcing the development? How about maintenance?

Your answers to the questions above can help guide you into making the best decision for your business.  

Our opinion: In certain situations, a custom CMS might be necessary depending on your needs.

To use a custom CMS it will usually require you to either commit to a web development company or have in-house web developers.  The option can make sense for a major corporation that is able to afford having a dedicated in-house web development team.

However, for most businesses, we think WordPress provides a great solution.  Websites which run on WordPress are much more affordable, and still offer enough functionality and customization for most businesses. When WordPress is used, it also provides you with the flexibility to be able to work with various developers, and ensure that your website will be able to adapt to changes in online design trends.

At the end of the day, you need a fully functioning website that’s designed for conversions. You can get there with a custom CMS, or templated WordPress website. The only difference is the time and effort you have to get it all done.
