How to use OpenSSH on Linux

What is OpenSSH?

OpenSSH is a suite based on SSH (Secure Shell) protocol providing a secure network for services like remote login or remote file transfer. OpenSSH is also known as OpenBSD Secure Shell and was initially developed as a part of OpenBSD operating system.

What are the features of OpenSSH?

  1. OpenSSH is freely available for everyone, their code encourages reusing and auditing of the code.
  2. OpenSSH has a secure tunnel to forward remote TCP ports through strong encryption (3DES, Blowfish, AES, Arcfour).
  3. An ad hoc SOCKS (Secure Sockets) proxy server can be created using OpenSSH.
  4. OpenSSH provides secure communication.

Difference between SSH and OpenSSH

  • SSH is a closed source cryptographic network protocol.

  • OpenSSH is a free open source protocol based on SSH.

  • SSH was first released in the year 1995 as SSH-1 protocol, trying to replace TELNET, rlogin, ftp and rsh protocols.

  • OpenSSH was released in the year 1999, for developers wanting a free software version, the original 1.2.12 release of SSH was released under open source license.

  • Some SSH commands are:

    Ssh-keygen, ssh-copy-id, ssh-add, ssh-agent, scp, sftp and sshd

  • Some commands are:

ssh, ssh-keygen, ssh-agent, ssh-keyscan,  scp, sftp and sshd

  1. Root access to your server
  2. Terminal (Linux)

How to enable OpenSSH on Servers:

In order to get SSH on the server, we need to run the OpenSSH package. For example, Apache is a package and the daemon is httpd. Similarly, OpenSSH is installed on the server and you use this via SSH. At ResellerClub, OpenSSH is already installed and ready to use on all our Linux Hosting servers and Managed Servers and clients have a complete root access using it. And also Reseller Hosting as well as Shared Hosting.

Although OpenSSH comes pre-installed on various versions of Linux for both the client side as well as server side and is incorporated into many commercial products. However, if you still wish to check if it’s installed then we can run the following commands.

Using OpenSSH on Linux:

To install OpenSSH on Linux, we use Ubuntu as an Operating System on standalone PC.

For Ubuntu/Debian:

Step 1: To install OpenSSH on client side and server side

Type the following command in the terminal and wait till the packages are downloaded and installed.

sudo apt-get install -y openssh-server openssh-client

Step 2: Check if the service is running

Once OpenSSH has been installed you will need to check if the service is running properly or not, run the following command.

service sshd status

Step 3: Configuration

Before editing the configuration file, it is important that you make a copy of the original file in case of any mistake you can reuse this and have the proper settings in place.

sudo cp /etc/ssh/sshd_config /etc/ssh/sshd_config.original-copy

I added the original-copy suffix, so every time I see this file I know it is an original copy of the sshd_config file.

Step 4: Connecting to OpenSSH

  1. By default the service runs on TCP port 22, you can change the port as such: Port 13
  2. To have sshd allow public key-based login, modify the following line:

PubkeyAuthentication yesIf the line is already present, then make sure it has not been commented.

  3. Restart your OpenSSH server so that the changes in the config file can take place.

    sudo /etc/init.d/ssh restart

  4. If you want to have your OpenSSH server display a nice login banner, then you can do so by modifying the contents of the file by

    Banner /etc/

By following the above steps you have successfully learned how to use OpenSSH on Linux. You can read this post too, to know more about using SSH like a Pro.

Form, Function, & Flair: The Three Pillars Of Web Design

The internet is a revolution for us mortals. It has given us more than we can fathom. Informational to interactive to inclusive, the world of the internet has changed shape with time and websites form a major chunk of this dynamic world. Being the online identity of businesses, websites dominate the internet space.

From HTML to JavaScript to Flash to CSS, the concept of website design development has changed drastically over the years. If you compare today’s websites with those that existed a decade ago, you’d see a striking difference and advanced technology has played an eminent role in the evolution of web design. Think about it, you no longer need to use a desktop computer to access a website, you can access it seamlessly on your smartphone, smartwatch or car HUD!

Form, Function, and Flair are the three pillars of web design. These elements, though have evolved over time, continue to remain at the forefront of web design development. Let’s understand these three elements and the impact they have on the web design process.

Form implies the aesthetic and structural element of the web design process. A balance between strong visual appeal and streamlined flow of information gives any website its structure. Keeping the visitor’s journey in mind, web designers need to creatively plan every step of the website. Today, websites have large and vibrant fonts, responsive hero images, flat design elements, and slides of information with precise lines of content. An emphasis on the use of infographics, video and textured backgrounds are part of the latest trends.

This implies the performance and user experience. Websites can range from simple one-pagers to more complicated multi-page websites with tons of information on it. An eCommerce website will have endless pages whereas a product website may only have one page sprayed with a couple of slides on it. Hamburger menus, convenient checkouts, short product videos, high quality images, smart layouts with elevated content are all part of the functionality element that makes a website stand out. The user experience paves the way for customers to come back to you. Keeping this in mind, the functionality element is imperative when designing a website.

Simply put, flair is individuality. It makes for the last leg of the web design process and is probably the most subjective element. Designers add their panache to create websites that are fluent in form and strong on function. A new take on traditional designs is always welcome – provided it works as smoothly. In fact, there are tons of pre-defined templates available that cater to every kind of website design requirement. Now, you may wonder how something so generic can be made individualistic! Choosing the right colors, font style, content style, menu styles, high-resolution images or video backgrounds will add that flair and personality to your website. However, you always have the option to design something from scratch!

The web design process is as interesting as it is grueling. In a nutshell, these three are the founding elements that make for the entire website design process. We like to call it F3 (Form, Function, and Flair).  Now that you know what the experts at had to share with you, let’s talk more about

What is is a web design contest based on the 3 core pillars of design mentioned above. As a web professional, you cater to innumerable client demands and expectations. There are various guidelines and instructions that you ought to follow. is not about your customer, it’s about YOU! It’s about eliminating these limitations while it dares you to be the best you’re capable of – raw, unfiltered and unhindered. You have all the freedom you need to showcase your talent.

How to Use the Power of Citations and Reviews to Improve Local Rankings

Local SEO is a lot different from SEO for a non-geo specific brand. Any SEO expert or practitioner will tell you how local SEO ranking factors keep on changing, making it difficult for businesses to leverage the power of top places on Google SERPs.

Here’s a quick look at local SEO ranking factors, as presented by Moz in its 2017 Local Search Ranking Factors report.

Local SEO is a lot different from SEO for a non How to Use the Power of Citations and Reviews to Improve Local Rankings

It’s no surprise that external locations signals (citations) and review signals feature in the top 5 contributors. In this guide, I will talk about leveraging citations and reviews for ramping up local SEO.

Understanding Citations

A citation is an online mention of your business name, address, and phone number (NAP). Consider citations as the equivalent of backlinks for your business website, just that NAP citations do not need to be hyperlinked to your website.

A mention of just your business name, without the address and phone number, is considered a partial citation, and not as beneficial as a complete citation. That’s why NAP is valued so much, because it becomes the ‘string’ that counts as a citation that Google values.

The best practices you need to follow to ensure NAP consistency are:

  • Citations help with local SEO are valuable only if they match the NAP of your website and your Google My Business page.
  • Focus on picking up a format of NAP that doesn’t have any quirkiness or unique elements.
  • Do a few Google searches for famous local businesses and see which name, address, and phone number formats they use.

Why Citations Rock?

Google uses citations as a factor for verifying the accuracy of the contact details of the business in their local business listings. Mismatching NAPs could confuse Google and cause it to either skip your listings, or show information that’s incorrect. On the contrary, if Google finds that dozens of websites mention the same NAP for your business, it’s all the more likely to include your NAP in its SERPs.

Business Directories for Citations

Here’s an action plan you can trust.

  • Get your Google My Business listing.
  • Make sure your My Business Profile is complete
  • Create an alternate email ID to create profiles on business directories; trust me, you need it, to stay safe from hundreds of spam mails every day.
  • Find a list of 50 (or better still, 100) online business directories; here’s a good source.
  • Find a freelancer or budget some time on your own to create at least 5 profiles every day (do this, and you’ll potentially have 150 citations in a month).
  • Also, look for niche specific business directories, such as Viator and TripAdvisor for touristy places, and Zomato for restaurants.

Beyond Directories

The common misconception going around in SEO spheres is that business directories are the sole source for getting citations. That’s untrue; there are several others, for instance:

  • Press releases
  • Profile pages
  • Question and answer sites
  • Article and guest post bylines
  • Forum signatures
  • Image and video descriptions

Go Big on Local SEO With Reviews

Review signals constitute 9.8% of local SEO. To devise a useful strategy of getting more traction via business reviews, you’d do well to first understand the reviews-relevant micro-factors that influence local SEO.

  • Number of native Google Maps reviews
  • Number of 3rd party reviews
  • Product/service keywords present in reviews
  • Number of reviews posted by authority reviewers
  • Authority of 3rd party websites where reviews are posted
  • Diversity of 3rd party websites where reviews are posted

Google My Business reviews

Getting your Google My Business reviews and stars to appear on the top of Google’s search result page can be a game changer for your local business. You need at least 5 reviews to show up there, and need to have more reviews than most competitors (which can be difficult).

With the help of Google Maps marketing, you can effectively promote your business to local audiences. Moreover, it makes a lot of sense to request all your recurring customers to leave a review; incentivize this by giving them a discount. Here’s a superb guide. Greg Gifford, SEO educator, suggests creating a ‘how to review’ help page for users so that they know exactly what to do.

A Comprehensive Business Reviews Strategy

Yelp is a pretty useful platform for getting your business reviews, because Google seems to value Yelp reviews highly. Don’t directly send your Yelp business page to users; instead direct them to do a Google search for your business + Yelp, click on the Yelp link in the search results, and then do the review. That’s because reviews done on Yelp via direct links can often be flagged and not published, because Yelp considers them suspicious.

Focus on people that already have a Yelp account, and motivate them to write long reviews. Make it a point to respond to reviews to create a sense of legitimacy around it (this makes sure Yelp doesn’t discard it).

By following a comprehensive business reviews collection strategy focused on your business website, Yelp, and Google My Business, you can move closer to completely dominating local SEO. See how The Violet Hour completely dominates the SERP using this strategy.

Local SEO is increasingly capturing higher proportions of global search volumes, and is the most vital enabler of success for local brands. Use the tips and tricks discussed in this guide to make citations and reviews the success factors for your local SEO success story.

Do new domain extensions affect SEO?

The truth is that domain names by themselves don’t have an inherent impact on the website’s SEO.  How do we know it? We asked Dallas based SEO expert Bill Hartzer. According to Bill, two newly registered domain names are given the same weight by search engines when it comes to organic rankings. So, if no other ranking criteria is considered, both have the same potential to rank high in organic search results. Google, in particular, has clearly specified how they treat domain names and new domain extensions on their Google Webmaster Blog. In this post, Google stated, ‘Overall, our systems treat new gTLDs like other gTLDs (like .com & .org). Keywords in a TLD do not give any advantage or disadvantage in search.’

On that note, did you know that Google recently purchased ‘’ for its Google My Business program? Any small business that creates a one-page website through this program will get a sub-domain name automatically.

Coming back to new domain extensions and SEO, it’s important to keep in mind that search engines consider hundreds of ranking factors to place one website over the other in search results. The number of these ranking factors is only going to increase and the their nature is only going to get more complicated with Artificial Intelligence being used in search engine algorithms.

Some of the key ranking factors for a website are:

  1. Backlinks from reputed, credible websites. A recent study from Stone Temple indicates that backlinks have a big role to play in improving SEO ranking. Getting backlinks, not just to your website’s home page but also to various internal pages and blog posts, gives a positive signal to search engines about the quality of your website.
  2. Along with backlinks, the anchor text (the blue, underlined, clickable text in a hyperlink) also has a significant role to play in improving SEO rankings. The more relevant the anchor text to the page it is linking to, the better it is for the SEO.
  3. The quality of content on your website also makes a big difference in all this. Fresh and original content is always good news for SEO.

What role does a domain name play in all this then?

A web page, even the ones that look like www.page49-78.html, can rank high in organic search results if they have the above 3 criteria working in their favor (along with various other ranking factors, of course). However, if www.page49-78.html showed up in your searches, would you click on it? The answer is no because you wouldn’t trust the link.  A good domain name, like will encourage people to click on it. A domain name also works to your advantage in the context of anchor text. If the website is backlinked to anchor text ‘mobile store’, it is a positive indication to the search engines about the quality of the website. So, a keyword-rich domain name can influence a website’s SEO ranking positively.

It is easier to find keyword-rich domain names that are relevant and meaningful on some of the new domain extensions such as .STORE for eCommerce, .TECH for technology, .PRESS for news, .FUN for media and entertainment and .SPACE for creative pursuits.

ResellerClub offers these domain extensions at a discounted price for a limited time period. Make the most of these promos NOW!

Should you choose a custom CMS for your new website?

Whether you need to establish a new web presence or redesign your current website, you need to have a content management system (CMS) for maintaining and updating your digital content. It’s critical to select the right CMS that best suits your needs, since after your initial design there is a good chance that it will be your most frequently used web maintenance tool.  But how do you make your choice?

There are many different types of CMS systems that are available for businesses to choose from. Most are template-based platforms that are more affordable, in addition to customized solutions offering unique benefits. Your decision will ultimately be based on which system fits your needs the best.

Customization possibilities

The most important feature that a custom CMS provides is the ability to build your platform according to your precise and exact specifications. An alternative to custom development is WordPress, which offers plugins to help meet the needs of individual businesses. However, plugins only provide limited functionality for a generalized platform.

WordPress is used by nearly 60 per cent of websites as their core CMS software. However, it’s near impossible to create a platform that will meet your individual marketing, content and web needs.

Client input

It’s a very simple process to start using a WordPress CMS: take an existing platform and make limited modifications to it to fit in with your overall digital strategy, and run with it!

On the other hand, a custom CMS, allows for a lot more direct input.  From the very beginning, you and your web developer can work together to establish what your needs are for your platform. Then you help test the CMS to make sure it meets all of your specifications, while there are numerous opportunities woven in to provide feedback. When a custom CMS is implemented, you can be directly involved in the entire design as well as implementation process of the system.

WordPress is an open source CMS system, meaning its code is accessible to everyone. It’s affordable, which is great. But in terms of safety, it isn’t very advantageous. New vulnerabilities and attacks on WordPress codes arise on a regular basis, which places your website at risk constantly due to the fact that it functions through the use of the same base code.

However, a custom CMS doesn’t, as we established above. The code gets designed from scratch, so you are a lot less vulnerable towards attacks that might not even be directly aimed at you. Due to its customizability, you might even be able to get your developer to integrate additional security measures for you.

More reasons to choose a custom CMS

Having a proprietary customized CMS may be similar to LEGOs; the only limit there is is your creativity. However, if you plan on designing your own website, you’ll need to seriously consider customization. Your needs may be greater than the functionality of current software that exists.

  • Flexibility: Having a website designer and developer who can help you build anything you need is helpful. However, third-party implementations are also easier when using a custom CMS.
  • Plugin-ins and Add-ons: Unlike WordPress, all additional tools need to be built to fit your custom design specifically that can only be supported by your developer. Otherwise, you will need to pay a different development team to become familiar with the customization to be able to provide support.
  • Hosting: Monthly support and hosting is included with most CMS solutions, which means you will need to use whichever provider your designer selects.
  • Cost: Yes, a custom CMS does cost more than a template-based format. It requires an advanced and specific set of skills as well as lots more time to build a custom CMS, so you should expect to pay double at least (or more) for a custom website compared to a WordPress website.
  • That’s why it’s important to decide what advantages are most important to you.
  • Speed: Given that a custom CMS will be designed to do precisely what you need it to do, it won’t be dragged down by any unnecessary bells and whistles. The code may be optimized in order to serve specific functions and increase the speed of your website.
  • Ease of use: To do their jobs, users only see what they actually need to see. An intuitive, well-written CMS may be easier to teach staff how to use compared to a more complex backend.
  • Support: Usually a custom CMS has dedicated in-house support from your developers. Therefore, usually problems are solved quickly.

What decision is right for you?

Before you can make a decision on a CMS to use, evaluate what your business needs are. Start by asking yourself the following questions:

  1. How large is the company? What number of end users will need access to the website?
  2. How important is price to you?
  3. What amount of time do you have available for implementing a new system?
  4. What degree of customization are you going to need?
  5. Are you planning on outsourcing the development? How about maintenance?

Your answers to the questions above can help guide you into making the best decision for your business.

Our opinion: In certain situations, a custom CMS might be necessary depending on your needs.

To use a custom CMS it will usually require you to either commit to a web development company or have in-house web developers.  The option can make sense for a major corporation that is able to afford having a dedicated in-house web development team.

However, for most businesses, we think WordPress provides a great solution.  Websites which run on WordPress are much more affordable, and still offer enough functionality and customization for most businesses. When WordPress is used, it also provides you with the flexibility to be able to work with various developers, and ensure that your website will be able to adapt to changes in online design trends.

At the end of the day, you need a fully functioning website that’s designed for conversions. You can get there with a custom CMS, or templated WordPress website. The only difference is the time and effort you have to get it all done.

Importance of Corporate Blogging Best Practices

Many people do not think a company blog is as important as content on social media platforms. Here’s a few stats that should make you think differently about corporate blogging:

HubSpot, 2017

How corporate blogs can help every type of business:

Before we jump right in, we’d like to address a question of how blogging can help you regardless of the structure of your business.

1.  For lone freelancer web designer/developers, a corporate blog can, in a very cost-effective way:

  • establish credibility in the space you wish to target
  • establish a good base for SEO
  • Serve as a portfolio for your work

2. For small and medium businesses, in addition to the above,

  • It shows customers that your business is alive and kicking

3. For Web professionals with larger companies, your website blog:

  • Helps complement your social media presence with more high-quality content
  • Is a platform that is all yours–no other media company can control what or how you get your message across in your blog

Corporate blogging best practices:

1.  Have clear goals for your blog:

A blog is important but don’t start one without charting out a plan. What do you really want to accomplish with your blog? Is it to be a voice for company management, explain product information, build leads, etc?

2. Keyword research–write genuine content for people not search engines:

Once you have your goal in mind, use a good keyword research tool like Google’s Keyword Planner to look at the traffic that key terms that are involved in the goals for your blog, generate. This will :

  1. Give you an idea for the competition out there for your keyword
  2. Give you more ideas on what people search for relative to your keyword

While the keyword research is also important from an SEO point of view. Do remember not to write for search engines. Two important reasons that most SEO agencies fail to understand:

  1. Good content will always make it to the top of the search rankings i.e content that customers/readers love
  2. Search engines get more intelligent by the day. Google can easily tell when a piece of content has been stuffed with keywords and is unhelpful and will blacklist your website immediately

3. Content guidelines:

Modern web readers tend to first skim content to assess its value before either deep-diving into the content piece or moving on to other website. What can help increase viewing time on your blog? Catch your reader’s’ attention with:

  1. Don’t plagiarize. Not only will this be bad for you legally, but it can also destroy your SEO efforts. Copyscape is a good tool to use to ensure you don’t face any plagiarism issues
  2. Use large,good quality images
  3. Depending on your audience- funny or intelligent GIFs could be a nice touch
  4. Video insets elaborating on your topic (Be sure to optimize the video description as well)
  5. Use other content engagement tools. Apester has some good tools that you can insert into your blog to not only engage your audience more but also  get good insights into their thinking

  1. Readable font sizes and styles
  2. A good structure – in terms of headings, sub-headings,bullet points, large quotes, etc
  3. Don’t be afraid to link to other good content. Readers will appreciate the gesture, see you as genuinely wanting to share knowledge and will definitely watch out for your next blog
  4. Don’t ghost write for your company leadership. Writing from your own hand will come across as more genuine and have more touch and insights  than anything that a writer in your team can put forth. Plus, you may not think it, but readers can always tell the difference
  5. Be the blog that tells it like it is. Fight the fear of being honest. If something didn’t go right with a product, don’t try and hide it. They may not be very happy, but customers will at least learn to trust your word
  6. As hard as it will be-make sales take the back seat in your blog. Use your main website to pitch your product. In your blog, write about real, researched, valuable topics that will matter to your audience
  7. Be unique -Give your blog personality. No content on the internet today can afford to be boring or blend into the crowd

4. The best blog ideas will come from your customers:

Talk to your customers as often as you can to see what topics resonate with them and what they really need more information on and need more help with.

5. Tell your readers what your blog is about:

Build a good blog sidebar to capture email leads or spur sharing, describe your blog, its writers with links to their profiles and links to the best liked posts of all time.

6. Promotion plan for your blog:

Draw up a content calendar for your blog and share it with your writers along with topic ideas and keywords. There’s no rule here for how often you should churn out blogs, but publishing one at least once a week should be good. This also lets customers know that you are actively in the game.

7. Respond to all comments:

With all the work you put into getting content out there for your blog, it is impossible to miss comments by your readers. Make sure you set up email alerts to more than one person in your content team to ensure all comments and queries are responded to as soon as possible.

8. Don’t write in the dark:

Look at your analytics tools to see what the numbers say about your blog. What is your average viewing time, bounce rate, do heatmaps say that customers read through to the end, how many return viewers do you get, etc

9. Optimize and re-purpose old content:

While in a limbo about ideas for good content (or good writers), a good idea is to repurpose old blog content into shorter pieces or infographics to share on social media. Draw up a calendar to publish old content as well.

There. We hope our blog will help yours.

  • Easy editing or updating
  • Possibility to add multimedia, in particular video
  • Ability to reach the customer really fast

On the other hand, some regular shoppers make a choice and place their orders online only after they have flicked through printed pages. Thus, their desires are also to be taken into account. When a printed catalog is delivered to their regular mailbox, the chances that the client will ignore it are lower than in case of an online catalog. There is no physical contact with the webpage deprived of smell and pleasant touch that enhances the desire to look through the pages. Besides, online catalogs cannot be personalized unlike printed ones which are targeted at a certain audience. Finally, if your potential client has no access to smartphone, computer, or laptop (which is however very unlikely), they will not be able to make use of a digital catalog.

You are the one who decides on the either a printed or online catalog marketing campaign. Print is not going to die completely, but it is high time to be modern. Nevertheless, you can incorporate elements of each of the strategies to gain the most benefits.
